A few thoughts before we begin:
- The picture above has a mom and her kids because finding a picture the correct size for this blog format is TRICKY- but, DADS, you are so important! You set such a powerful example in your homes!
- Amanda touched on this last week and I hope this gives you some more ideas!
Without further ado…
I am eager for the day we will worship together again. I am excited to see your families at the check-in computers, eat a reasonable amount of donuts, and talk with friends in the parking lot between the sanctuary and education building.
BUT, one thing I hope will change is how we do Sunday School. If this indefinite amount of quarantine time has reinforced anything, it is that home should quite literally be home base for all things spiritual(not to add more to your to-do list).
What we do on Sunday mornings with your children should support what you are modeling at home. If we want our kids to have sticky faith(who wouldn’t want that?), then it needs to be a faith alive outside of church.
Knowing where and how to start incorporating faith at home is HARD! Here’s the deal, you aren’t going to start perfectly. Your kids will not be reciting scripture tomorrow, but maybe in a month or a year they might be slightly more engaged – we are playing the long game here!
Before I provide a list of helpful resources for you, YOU have to be in God’s word yourself. Do your kids see you reading your Bible or Psalm book? Leave it out on the kitchen counter and read it while you are waiting on their waffle to cook in the toaster oven(just me?)
Ultimately, you don’t need a long list of resources to start teaching your kids about Jesus, BUT, these provide a meaningful outline to help your family learn about God together.
Family Devotionals Resources:
- The One Year Classic Family Devotionals – Read a few of these a week at the dinner table. Start with one night a week and build up.
- Psalm Prayers for the Nations – Goes along with what we are reading as a church!
- Big Truths for Little Kids – Teach your kids the basic truths of our faith.
- Scripture Memory Songs – Play these in the car – it will sink it sooner than you think.
The Munger Kids’ Team has a lot more idea where this came from if you are interested, please reach out. I will leave you with this verse:
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.
Psalm 78:4.
