Many of these Psalms focus on David reflecting on his life. Even when hard and discouraging events come, we can trust that God will be faithful again! There is great benefit when we take time to see how God has worked in our life.
May 18 – Psalm 36
Today’s Takeaways:
- Part of this Psalm can be found in this early 2000s song!
- This is one of two psalms(other is Psalm 18) that is titled “Of David, the servant of the Lord”
- David contrats a wicked man(vs 1-4) and a righteous God(vs 5-12)

- David was first and foremost a servant of the Lord. What does it mean to be a servant of the Lord?

May 19 – Psalm 37
Today’s Takeaways:
- In verse 25, David tells us he is old now and passing on his wisdom. He has seen God’s faithfulness over time and can testify that God is faithful when we are obedient(vs 26-29)
- David promises FIVE times in this psalm that the faithful will “inherit the land”. God has secured a place for His people – maybe that is now or maybe it is in the world to come.

May 20 – Psalm 38
Today’s Takeaways:
- This psalm reflects David’s both physical and spiritual pain
- David drew near to God even when he knew God was displeased with him
- David knew that the physical pain he was feeling was a result of his sin
- His friends have left him and his enemies are trying to find him

- In verses 15-16, David is still clinging on to his hope in the Lord despite his hard situation. We can have hope in God even when we have disobeyed him or feel like our friends have left us. Have you ever felt far from God?
May 21 – Psalm 39

- David prays to God for wisdom to understand the briefness of his life here on earth.
- A vapor would have been one of the smallest units of measurements in Jesus’ time.

- Our number of days on earth is like a “vapor” compared to eternity with God. How does that change how you look at hard or challenging things?
May 22 – Psalm 40

- David has mentioned waiting patiently on the Lord many times since we started the Psalms!
- The word miry means very muddy! So, the Lord delivered David from a muddy pit.
- David proclaimed the goodness of the Lord with his words and actions!

May 23 – Psalm 41

- David talks about how we are blessed when we consider the poor. This can mean both economically poor or also the poor in spirit(sick, isolated or helpless).
- David asks God to heal his soul. Even though David had done a lot of good things that didn’t erase his sins.

May 24 – Psalm 42
Today’s Takeaways:
- Unlike the majority of psalms that we have read thus far, this one is NOT authored by David.
- The tone of the psalms is sad. The author feels far from God and is discouraged.
- The last verse says that he has hope in God.
