I’m sure you’re doing a lot of reading with your kids during these corona times so I thought I’d share a couple new books we’ve recently discovered. In my family we usually read Bible stories before bed and we have a pretty wide arsenal of editions when it comes to age level and translation. But truth be told, the kids don’t always want to read one. So every now and then it’s good to find other ways to keep your kids interested and engaged in learning Bible stories and truths. Amanda mentioned some time ago a book called You Are Special by Max Lucado, which is a fantastic story for kids of all ages and now on a regular rotation at our house as well. If you don’t have it on your bookshelf it would make a great gift!
My daughter recently got a book series called The Bible Belles by Erin Weidemann. It’s a five-book series which uses the day-to-day life of modern-day school girl, Rooney Cruz, to tell the stories of five women from the Bible. The idea behind these books is to get girls excited about heroines of the Bible. Hannah is the Belle of Prayer, Esther is the Belle of Patience, Abigail is the Belle of Bravery, Ruth is the Belle of Loyalty and Deborah is the Belle of Leadership. As a disclaimer, there is a bit of fantasy involved (a magic portal that let’s Rooney time travel to when the Belles were alive and a guardian angel who helps Rooney navigate the world). But this is not a Bible, it’s a Bible-inspired story, and even my preschooler can tell the difference. As she will hopefully be heading to kindergarten in the Fall (fingers crossed!) these stories show real life situations and help kids see how they could deal with them, because unfortunately teasing and cliques are real.
