God Does What He Says He Will Do!

This week we see several instances where God does exactly what He says He will – both in giving Abraham and Sarah a son and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. With each story, God reveals something to us about His character and how He interacts with His people – let’s see if we can make the connections.

Monday, 2/10/2020 – Genesis 18:1-16

Today’s Takeaways:

  • God comes to Abraham as one of the three visitors. God has appeared to Abraham before (Genesis 12:7, Genesis 17:1). Abraham and Sarah show hospitality to these visitors.
  • Mamre was a significant place in Abraham’s life.
  • God promises Abraham a son for the second time (first time in Genesis 17:17-22)
  • Sarah laughs when she hears God say that she is going to have a son

Today’s Talking Topics:

  • Can you think of a significant place in your life?
  • How can you show hospitality in your life – both big and small?
  • God often has to repeat His promises to us! Pray that you would know and trust what God says the first time around. Psalm 9:10.

Tuesday, 2/11/2020  – Genesis 18:16-33

Today’s Takeaways:

-God reveals to Abraham his plans to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah

– Abraham asks God if He will spare the city for 50,45,40,30,20 and, finally, 10 righteous men.

Today’s Talking Topics:

  • What does Abraham’s conversation with God teach us? Does it change your view on how YOU can talk with God?

Wednesday, 2/12/2020 – Genesis 19:1-38

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Lot was a man who loved God but comprised his morals under pressure
  • The Lord spared Lot from the destruction of Sodom and Gomororah

Today’s Talking Topics:

  • Yesterday we read that Abraham asked God if He would spare the city for the sake of 10, what does that tell us about the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and Lot?

Thursday, 2/13/2020 – Genesis 20:1-18

Today’s Takeaways:

-Abraham lies about Sarah being his sister for the second time (first time in Genesis 12:10-13)

– God spared Abimelech from sinning

Today’s Talking Topics:

– What excuse did Abraham use for lying about Sarah being his sister? How often do we justify or excuse things that are not the full truth?

– Abimelech gave Abraham lot of gifts  – does this feel sort of backward to how it should be? Why?

Friday, 2/14/2020 – Genesis 21:1-34

Today’s Takeaways:

  • God fulfills His promise to Abraham and Sarah. They have a son, Issac.
  • Under God’s instruction, Abraham sends his oldest son, Ishmael, and Hagar out of the house and into the desert.
  • Abraham makes a covenant with a Philistine King (likely not the same Abimelech we heard about earlier this week)

Today’s Talking Topics:

  • God asks Abraham to do some pretty harsh things because they were getting in the way of Abraham trusting God 100 percent. Can you think of anything that gets in the way of you trusting God?
