Sometimes I’m a little jealous of the way my husband grew up. He went to the same small Christian school from K through 12 and he learned a lot about his faith. At school, he had to commit Bible verses and songs to memory – and he was tested on them, just like in his math and reading classes. All those verses and songs he learned as a young child are still there and even some 30-odd years later they have a way of popping up at just the right time. When our kids are scared, he busts out “God is bigger than the boogie man”. When we’re reading the Bible with our kids, he’ll teach them a song to help them remember a passage. I do that too now, but I have to think about it. I didn’t learn these things as a child and so they’re not seared in my heart like they are in his.
I want our children (not just my two kids, but all 350+ Mungarians that I am blessed to work with) to be more like my husband.
It is so important to be able to quote scripture and to know where in the Bible it’s from. It’s so important to know where our faith comes from. It’s so important to study the Bible’s meaning and to make as many connections as we can.
This was our first year with our new curriculum and we had a lot of fun with it. Of course, there’s plenty of space for improvement and I am giddy with excitement to plan out another year.
In our preschool classes this year, especially the oldest ones, we have been working on memorizing The Lord’s Prayer and we’ll be doing even more of that kind of thing in the upcoming school year. Because young children are like little sponges and we need to use this time wisely. Last Sunday the children had the opportunity to pray the Lord’s Prayer one-by-one to me. Yes, they were put on the spot, but that’s real life. And if they could say it on their own, with no help, they got a certificate.
Here are a few of the kiddos who earned their certificate last week. We’ll be giving them out for the next three weeks, so practice with your kids at home and we are excited to see them pray it in Sunday school! (And be grateful we don’t live in the Old Testament times and I’m not making you teach your children to recite the whole Bible, cover-to-cover! 😊)
