Jesus had grandparents. That’s weird to think about.
This week we’ll read the Luke account of Jesus’ entire lineage. If you have a curious child who wants to compare it with the list in Matthew, you’ll notice some differences. DOES THIS MEAN THE BIBLE CAN’T BE TRUSTED!?!?
No.
Both accounts put their emphasis where they think it’s most helpful. Matthew tends to lean more Joseph heavy while Luke leans towards Mary. Matthew may have used Joseph’s lineage while Luke used Mary’s. And yes, both list Joseph, but it was not unusual, in that time, for someone to call a father-in-law a father.
As always, don’t get bogged down in the details. Read to hear the story of God’s love for humanity. It’s always, without fail, there.
