The Most Joyous Time Of Year

Today we have a guest post by Kellee Shoemaker, who has been part of Munger VBS for 6 years. She shares with us why she keeps coming back and one invaluable pro tip.

Munger VBS is one of the highlights of the year for my family!  We look forward to participating every year, and my girls talk about something they remember or learned from VBS even months later.  It has become part of family DNA – the songs, the Bible stories, the games, and even the sno-cones – all of it helps us remember that we are created and loved by God.

I have been fortunate to volunteer at Munger VBS for several years.  I am continually blessed by it year after year – there’s almost nothing better than listening to 300+ kids praising Jesus!  The music at VBS is definitely one of the highlights.  Kate and the band do an amazing job leading us in worship every day, plus each child is given a CD, so you get to listen to the songs on repeat once VBS is over; VBS soundtracks are the perfect tunes for any car ride.

I was first a group leader for two years and now have helped lead Sr. Games for the past 4 years.  We want kids to know they are special and loved by God all while playing a game and having some fun.  I love seeing the kids make connections between the point of the game and Jesus.  There are always lots of questions and great comments when we have discussion time.  I remember one girl last year really wanted to be the volunteer when we asked for a helper.  When she was chosen she actually decided to let her friend volunteer instead, showing kindness like Jesus would want her to.  It’s a honor to get to be a part of these kids’ week at VBS, and I’ve learned so much from them over the years.

Another highlight from volunteering at VBS are the friendships I’ve formed with other Mungarians.  I have loved serving alongside some of my closest friends and also getting to know new folks in the church.  It has also given me an opportunity to not only tell my girls that serving in the church is important but to show them as well.  I love getting home from a day at VBS and exchanging stories or talking about what we learned that day while we eat lunch.  Then we all take a nap…because let’s be real, it’s exhausting, but in the best way possible.
